Yesterday, I was working outside picking up apples that keep on falling and creating work for me.l, which is not always pleasing to me.
Apple’s are great from eating fresh whole, chopped or sliced and baked, or any even dried, but not so great when you are sorting the bad, kinda bad, or good from each other on the ground.
Tiring, I went in to make lunch and as I was moving back and forth in the kitchen, I felt a little tickle on the leg, and unconsciously brushed my leg and felt what I at first thought was a twig attached to pants.
I pulled it away, a bit irritated that a twig attached itself to me, but in nanoseconds while my memories, of things came to me, as I lifted it away. It was not a twig but something more alarming and unusual that had chosen to hitch a ride.
As I was pulling it up, my eyes were already moving towards the thing in my fingers. My brain was telling me the object was not quite right and although scratchy, was a bit too soft, and I flung it to the ground, in a natural reaction to something unknown, and may need to fear.
I looked down and it took a split second to realize this three inch thing was a preying mantis, on her back now and her legs were rapidly moving to upright herself.
Now I have a rule that insects or otherwise are not allowed in the house. And it took a split second of processing to rationalize I was not in danger.
Surely, this monster was not so big that it could bite my head off, or cause me great harm. And I bent over and picked it up and felt the scrabbling with her legs, and the softness of her abdomen and started to carry her towards the door, cursing going in my head.
My wife was there and had gloves on because she was just coming in from picking up apples and offered to take it the rest of the way.
I gladly passed the beast off to her so she could carry it somewhere safe to do her own little thing, like eating other bugs, instead of me.
